In 2002 Microsoft introduced its Support Lifecycle policy based on customer feedback to have more transparency and predictability of support for Microsoft products. As per this policy, Microsoft Business and Developer products, including Windows and Office products, receive a minimum of 10 years of support (5 years Mainstream Support and 5 years Extended Support), at the supported service pack level.
Thus, Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will go out of support on April 8, 2014. If your organization has not started the migration to a modern desktop, you are late. Based on historical customer deployment data, the average enterprise deployment can take 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment. To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support.

It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates.
Running Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 in your environment after their end of support date may expose your company to potential risks, such as:

Disable Nagle-Algorithm to Increase your Internet Speed for Quick Response

Imagine an airline service, transporting each passenger in an individual plane, so that the commuters do not face any delays after arriving at the airport. Does the capacity and resources of any airline company allow that? The true answer is a ‘NO’. Plane would wait for its time to collect certain travelers, and fill in its volume before taking off.

Similar is the case with your computer systems. While sending packets of information on a network, your system realizes the capacity of each packet (plane), and the frequency of data protocol (passengers) to be conveyed. To reduce the overall network load, data is accumulated until the volume of each packet is occupied. This accumulation of data causes lag, in result of which, the user may have to wait for a while. This entire process is administered by a Windows component, called Nagle-Algorithm.

Nagle-Algorithm is enabled by default in Windows 7 and its successive versions. Above and beyond its convenience, Nagle-Algorithm may lead to a dissatisfied user. There are activities that may require a much quicker response, for example, online games. To address such a situation, this article entraps a tip to disable Nagle-Algorithm. It is to get a free flow of data protocol through the network, so as to elevate the speed of internet operations. Before moving further, you first need to identify the appropriate NIC Interface.

 NIC Interface

A computer may have multiple internet connections. For each connection, Windows Registry creates a separate NIC Interface or NIC-ID. This ID is displayed in the form of cryptic combination of letters and numbers, enclosed in braces. To recognize the appropriate NIC-ID, need to acquire the IP address of your current or active internet connection.

• Type ‘CMD’ in the search box and hit Enter to open Command Prompt
• On the black screen, type ‘IPCONFIG’ and press Enter to view info on your active connection
• Locate and note down your IP address, displayed next to IPv4 Address, under Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection
• Exit Command Prompt

Disabling Nagle-Algorithm

Nagle-Algorithm can be disabled with a simple registry modification. Please be advised to remember the IP address, noted in the above steps. For a subsequent practice, see the following steps.

• Type ‘REGEDIT’ in the search box and hit Enter to open Windows Registry Editor
• In the left pane, expand through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to reach the following key
• SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces

This key may contain several NICs, depending upon the number of internet connections you have used. To disable Nagle-Algorithm of the correct internet profile, you need to access the correct NIC-ID. For this purpose, click each interface key and find and match the IP address with the one noted in the previous section, in the right pane of Registry Editor. It is likely to exist within a string Value, named ‘IPAddress’ or ‘DhcpIPAddress’.

When found, stay in the same key, and in the left panel of registry editor

• Right click the empty place, and choose New to create two DWORD Values
• Rename these values as ‘TcpAckFrequency’ (sending out packets immediately)
• and ‘TCPNoDelay’ (Disabling Nagle-Algorithm)
• Double click both the entries to Modify
• Put 1 as their Value data to activate them, and click OK to save your changes
• Close Registry Editor, and Restart your Computer

Note

It is to inform that Nagle-Algorithm is an essential Windows tool, and needs to be reactivated for a proficient piece of work. A permanently disabled Nagle-Algorithm may have a visible influence on your regular bandwidth. Once you are done with your work, reverse this setting by changing the data of two newly created values to 0.

How do I Fix Error 0xc00000e9?

The error code titled above is referred as an I/O error, and tends to appear when system is unable to make contact with certain components. A spoiled hardware, corrupted system files, and/or misconfigured BIOS/CMOS Settings lead to this issue. Once encountered, you may not be able to boot into your Windows operating system, and stuck on a blank screen with this error message on it. In another scenario, you may not be able to boot to Windows in a Normal mode, but through a Safe mode. In the first case, you would need to insert an installation media into your CD/DVD drive and boot through it. Technically, an operating system is booted from a storage device. If the storage device does not assist your computer by providing the required bootable files, it would end up in error code 0x00000e9.

Below are the causes and detailed prescriptions to address this issue. Before moving, make sure your CD/DVD Drive is not inclosing any unbootable disc, and set as the most preferred in boot order, if the system is not booting with the least bit.

Causes

There could be multiple reasons due to which this error resides in your computer.

• Your computer may have been under attack by one or more intruders (Viruses), which in result corrupts the registry data related to startup or boot in. Although, PCs nowadays are more secured under the safeguard of different well-known antivirus solutions; however, cent percent protection is not guaranteed.
• It may also devise from a badly written program. Users recurrently install and uninstall programs, applications, system tools, and their updates. Any of these may rise up, noncomplying with the standard regulations of your system. Consequently, a conflict rises between the system and application, harming system files that are vital for running Windows properly. Similarly, latest updates of even legitimate software can hold a fatal bug within it.
• Hard drives storing and holding our data have a limited life span. It can live more or less, depending upon its use and maintenance. A dying hard drive also refuses to boot you in. On the other hand, when we command our systems to shut down, they take a while to wind up the services/processes and saves essential configuration files. Rescue Boot Disc

Boot your computer through an antivirus rescue boot disc, following a systematic scan to detect and remove viruses. In order to assure malware-free directories, try scanning with multiple antivirus solutions.

• Search and download a reliable antivirus solution for the internet
• Update the virus definitions for the antivirus program.
• Set in the bootable rescue tool on a removable storage
• Restart your computer and boot in using bootable rescue tool
• Scan your PC with antivirus and wait until the process completes
• Click to remove the detected threats

Check your Hard Drive

If you are unable to resolve the issue, even after the implementation of all prescribed practices, it points out to your hard drive encompassing errors. To see whether your storage device is up to the mark or not,

• Boot to your system via Safe mode
• Open your Computer directory, right click your drive, and go to its Properties
• Access Tools tab in Properties window, and click Check button under Error-checking option.
• On next dialog box, check both options stating, Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery for bad sectors
• Click Start button to begin the scan

Please be tolerant, as this process of scanning and fixing may take some while, depending on the size and possible errors on your hard drive. If you find out that the drive is factually damaged, please replace it before any further inconveniences.

Remove Badly Written Program

If you suspect that the error occurred due to a badly written program, you need to first identify that program and then remove it. For this purpose, carry out the following steps

• Go to Advanced Boot Manager  by pressing F8 key, while your Turn on your PC
• Among different boot options, choose to boot in a Safe Mode
• This will result in a boot with minimum process and services loaded
• Go to Control Panel and click Uninstall a program under Programs category
• Among the list of applications, pinpoint the recently installed applications after the installation of which, errors incurred. Right click such items and choose to Uninstall

Repair your Registry

Windows Registry is a database that stores the entries containing paths to executable files, whether of drivers, system files, or applications. If these entries are decayed with broken paths or paths to non-existing data, it can result in the subject error. It is therefore, necessary to regularly examine and maintain the good health of registry records. System Restore

If this does not solve the problem, try to reinstate your settings via a System Restore. In this regard, you must have first created a restore point in an earlier good time. System restore route can be located in Windows startup options, and can easily be carried out by following the given instructions.

• Go to Advance Recovery Options, while you boot from Windows installation disc
• Go for the option stating System Restore to reverse your settings
• The next screen lists the restore points created at different times
• Choose a point where you want your system to be restored (preferably most recent)

Windows Re-Install

If the problem persists, go for a clean install. This would permanently remove old settings and data in your system drive, but will most probably solve your issue. Once you have re-installed Windows, you can revive your settings from a backup stored on a removable disc or drive, if any.

• Go to Advance Recovery Options, while you boot from Windows installation disc
• Go for the last option stating Re-install Windows, for a fresh set up
• On the next screen, confirm the input language and click Next button
• Please wait, while your computer copies Windows files and extracts them
• Type a username, computer name, and proceed with Next button
• On the next screen, choose from the Windows Updates settings
• Select your Time Zone, set up correct time, and click Next
• Select your computers current location on the network, and move with Next

Applying these steps would definitely help you to cope up with seeing irritating registry error.

How to Fix HAL.dll Missing Error

Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) or hal.dll is a Windows system file, which implements a number of hardware functions. Although drivers for most of the hardware are contained in files with .sys extension, a few core drivers are compiled into hal.dll.

• Update the Volume Boot Code to BOOTMGR by booting with Command Prompt in any version of Windows. In the black screen of Command Prompt, type the command bootsect /nt60 sys and hitEnter to update it for you. Now Restart the computer and it should boot normally.
• Check your hard drive for any errors, as it may not let your PC to act in a usual way. In this regard, reboot with Command Prompt and execute the command CHKDSK C: /R. It will examine your system drive, detect errors in it, and try to fix it. Please not that C: refers to the drive containing system data.

If CHKDSK utility has actually discovered errors or bad sectors on your hard drive, but is not able to recover it, you would need to replace your hard drive and carry a new and clean install of Windows.
