Why is Microsoft ending support for Windows XP and Office 2003?

In 2002 Microsoft introduced its Support Lifecycle policy based on customer feedback to have more transparency and predictability of support for Microsoft products. As per this policy, Microsoft Business and Developer products, including Windows and Office products, receive a minimum of 10 years of support (5 years Mainstream Support and 5 years Extended Support), at the supported service pack level.
Thus, Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will go out of support on April 8, 2014. If your organization has not started the migration to a modern desktop, you are late. Based on historical customer deployment data, the average enterprise deployment can take 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment. To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support.

It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates.
Running Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 in your environment after their end of support date may expose your company to potential risks, such as:
  • Security & Compliance Risks: Unsupported and unpatched environments are vulnerable to security risks. This may result in an officially recognized control failure by an internal or external audit body, leading to suspension of certifications, and/or public notification of the organization’s inability to maintain its systems and customer information.
  • Lack of Independent Software Vendor (ISV) & Hardware Manufacturers support: A recent industry report from Gartner Research suggests "many independent software vendors (ISVs) are unlikely to support new versions of applications on Windows XP in 2011; in 2012, it will become common." And it may stifle access to hardware innovation: Gartner Research further notes that in 2012, most PC hardware manufacturers will stop supporting Windows XP on the majority of their new PC models.

Disable Nagle-Algorithm to Increase your Internet Speed for Quick Response

Imagine an airline service, transporting each passenger in an individual plane, so that the commuters do not face any delays after arriving at the airport. Does the capacity and resources of any airline company allow that? The true answer is a ‘NO’. Plane would wait for its time to collect certain travelers, and fill in its volume before taking off.
Similar is the case with your computer systems. While sending packets of information on a network, your system realizes the capacity of each packet (plane), and the frequency of data protocol (passengers) to be conveyed. To reduce the overall network load, data is accumulated until the volume of each packet is occupied. This accumulation of data causes lag, in result of which, the user may have to wait for a while. This entire process is administered by a Windows component, called Nagle-Algorithm.
Optimize Your Internet Speed to Run Faster
Nagle-Algorithm is enabled by default in Windows 7 and its successive versions. Above and beyond its convenience, Nagle-Algorithm may lead to a dissatisfied user. There are activities that may require a much quicker response, for example, online games. To address such a situation, this article entraps a tip to disable Nagle-Algorithm. It is to get a free flow of data protocol through the network, so as to elevate the speed of internet operations. Before moving further, you first need to identify the appropriate NIC Interface.
 NIC Interface
A computer may have multiple internet connections. For each connection, Windows Registry creates a separate NIC Interface or NIC-ID. This ID is displayed in the form of cryptic combination of letters and numbers, enclosed in braces. To recognize the appropriate NIC-ID, need to acquire the IP address of your current or active internet connection.
  • Type ‘CMD’ in the search box and hit Enter to open Command Prompt
  • On the black screen, type ‘IPCONFIG’ and press Enter to view info on your active connection
  • Locate and note down your IP address, displayed next to IPv4 Address, under Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection
  • Exit Command Prompt

Disabling Nagle-Algorithm
Nagle-Algorithm can be disabled with a simple registry modification. Please be advised to remember the IP address, noted in the above steps. For a subsequent practice, see the following steps.
  • Type ‘REGEDIT’ in the search box and hit Enter to open Windows Registry Editor
  • In the left pane, expand through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to reach the following key
  • SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces
This key may contain several NICs, depending upon the number of internet connections you have used. To disable Nagle-Algorithm of the correct internet profile, you need to access the correct NIC-ID. For this purpose, click each interface key and find and match the IP address with the one noted in the previous section, in the right pane of Registry Editor. It is likely to exist within a string Value, named ‘IPAddress’ or ‘DhcpIPAddress’.
How to Disable NAgle Algorithem in Registry
When found, stay in the same key, and in the left panel of registry editor
  • Right click the empty place, and choose New to create two DWORD Values
  • Rename these values as ‘TcpAckFrequency’ (sending out packets immediately)
  • and ‘TCPNoDelay’ (Disabling Nagle-Algorithm)
  • Double click both the entries to Modify
  • Put 1 as their Value data to activate them, and click OK to save your changes
  • Close Registry Editor, and Restart your Computer

It is to inform that Nagle-Algorithm is an essential Windows tool, and needs to be reactivated for a proficient piece of work. A permanently disabled Nagle-Algorithm may have a visible influence on your regular bandwidth. How to Fix HAL.dll Missing Error

Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) or hal.dll is a Windows system file, which implements a number of hardware functions. Although drivers for most of the hardware are contained in files with .sys extension, a few core drivers are compiled into hal.dll.

A corrupted or missing hal.dll file can cause many troubles in your operating system, with frequent annoying messages or preventing you to boot into Windows normally. This article contains certain ideas, suggested to handle this issue in an accomplished manner.
A corrupt or missing hal.dll file is easily identifiable, as Windows displays the error messages stated below.
  • Cannot find hal.dll
  • Hal.dll is missing or corrupt



Causes
It is obvious that the error is caused due to misbehaving DLL file. It can either be attacked by a virus or conflicted with a badly written program / application.
  • The above noted error can also result from a damaged Hard Drive
  • In most of the cases, a missing hal.dll is due to issues with Master Boot Code.
Solutions
The only way to get your PC going in such a situation is by recovering or repairing the hal.dll file. The different ways to do so are described underneath.
  • It is quite possible the issue, which seems a load of trouble, is nothing but just a fluke. To escape a major workaround, Restart your computer by turning it off and back on with a moment delay. If so, the system will not bother you anymore. But if the problem persists, try implementing following measures.
  • Enter your BIOS settings and check out the boot sequence. It is quite possible that you have changed the boot order while connecting an external storage drive, and overlooked to revert to the prior settings. In this situation, change boot order to your current drive with system files on it.
  • Boot with System Recovery Options in Windows 7, or Advanced Startup Options in Windows 8. These options embed some of the Windows useful tools with automated fix-it capabilities. Choose to fix with Startup Repair in Windows 7 and Repair your PC in Windows 8.
  • Update the Volume Boot Code to BOOTMGR by booting with Command Prompt in any version of Windows. In the black screen of Command Prompt, type the command bootsect /nt60 sys and hitEnter to update it for you. Now Restart the computer and it should boot normally.
  • Check your hard drive for any errors, as it may not let your PC to act in a usual way. In this regard, reboot with Command Prompt and execute the command CHKDSK C: /R. It will examine your system drive, detect errors in it, and try to fix it. Please not that C: refers to the drive containing system data.
If CHKDSK utility has actually discovered errors or bad sectors on your hard drive, but is not able to recover it, you would need to replace your hard drive and carry a new and clean install of Windows.
